Each year, VSA runs a art competition for children and youths with Special Needs. For the 2009 art competition, the theme is "I Have A Dream". This year's competition invites them to dare to be brave by stretching their imagination to the boundless sky of dreams.
Through this exhibition, we hope to sow light in every artists' heart. Every achievement begins from a little dream. When they dare to dream, they will no longer feel limited by their disabilities. Instead with a hope in their heart, they will stand tall and reach out for the best that they want to be.
The winning and commendable pieces are exhibited at Forum The Shopping Mall (Orchard Road next to Hilton Hotel). The exhibition will be for a period of ten days from 18th September to 27th September 10am to 8pm.
Buy an artwork at the Exhibition
At the exhibition you will also find paintings by other VSA artists which have been put up for sale. You are invited to show your support to the artists by appreciating the thoughts and ideas that are expressed in these artworks and create the desire to communicate and be part of it by owning a piece of their works. In doing so, you not only have a beautiful painting in your home or office that you can enjoy. In addition you get the added satisfaction of being able to connect to another fellow human being who may be different but at the same time inspiring in thoughts and deeds.
"Dream Catcher" Children Craft Workshop
(19 Sep - 27 Sep 2009, 11am – 6.00 pm daily)
In conjunction with the “I have a Dream” VSA Children Art Exhibition we are also running a “Dream Catcher” Children Craft Workshop for young visitors to the exhibition. The Dream Catcher is a craft originated from the Native American People. They are hung above sleeping children to protect them from having nightmares. It is believed that only good dreams will filter and descend through the feathers of the dream catcher to the child while the bad dreams are trapped in the net and disappear in the light of the day. Children attending the workshop will be able to make and bring home the dream catcher that they created. This craft workshop is provided free to children from the special schools while other children can also enjoy it for a fee of $5.00.

About VSA
Very Special Arts Singapore seeks to provide individuals
with disabilities with the opportunities to access the arts for the purposes of
rehabilitation and social integration. To achieve this, VSA Singapore promotes
the educational, social, rehabilitative and therapeutic benefits of visual and
performing arts for people with disabilities; integrates these individuals into
mainstream society through the arts and whenever possible, helps them obtain financial
assistance and independence through arts and arts-creation.
To
realize its objectives, VSA Singapore works in close partnership with other community,
social and arts institutions locally and abroad, training and showcasing the talents
of people with disabilities. Its activities cater to both children and adults
with sensorial, learning, physical and behavioural disabilities, as well as their
teachers, trainers, relatives and volunteers.
VSA
was founded on the belief that the arts are central to our lives and, as such,
belong to every one of us. The arts educate, inspire, and transform us, sometimes
for a minute, often for a lifetime. However,
the arts often remain beyond the reach of people with disabilities. VSA removes
some of these obstacles by promoting the creative power in people with disabilities.
They provide opportunities for creative talents to be nurtured and developed.
VSA Singapore programmes enrich the lives of people with disabilities and their
communities. As the leading arts organization for people with disabilities, VSA
Singapore increases access to the arts for people with disabilities by working
with schools and communities through programmes, which provide for rehabilitation
and social integration.
Currently, VSA runs the following programmes:
1.

Special Art Class
This
is an on-going programme for children with disabilities and their siblings. The
classes take students through the art making process and teach them how to go
beyond simply drawing images from their environment, empowering them to create
unique works that allow freer self-expression.In
2004, the students of the art classes made trips to the Singapore Art Museum and
other venues to learn more about art. Two students also won the opportunity (in
an art competition sponsored by Credit Suisse) to go on a painting trip to Sydney
with VSA artist, Gregory Burns. | 2.

Arts Camp
Since
1995, the highlight of the children's programme has been the children's arts camp,
which allows children with disabilities to experience various art activities as
well as be able to socialize with other children with and without disabilities.
This is also an opportunity for members of the CC groups, residents and students
to volunteer in running the camp. This day camp ends with an exhibition and performance
by the participants and is attended by families and friends of the participants
and grass-root leaders. Since
2002, VSA has also organised an annual arts camp for youth with and without disabilities
at the end of each year. This second camp caters to "graduates" from
our children's camps who still look forward to a holiday programme that gives
them the opportunity to be independent and meet new friends. Incorporated into
this camp is our buddy programme that introduces 13-14 year olds without disabilities
to youths with disabilities as a way of preparing them for volunteer work with
the disabled. | 3.
| Art
Competition
Since
2003, VSA has organised an annual art competition for children and youths with
disabilities to encourage more participation in the arts. The competition sees
over 200 entries annually and is usually followed by an exhibition of winning
and commendable works to inspire children and youths with special needs to participate
in the arts. |
VSA
Singapore has also initiated the Arts for Livelihood and Employment (ALIVE) programme
to offer lifelong learning and career opportunities for people with disabilities.
The initiatives involved include corporate commissions, an annual art exhibition,
art bazaars, a crafter's guild, special arts workshops, a seasonal card project
and assistance to artists.
Very
Special Arts Singapore (VSA Singapore) was established as a non-profit charitable
organization in 1996, and is affiliated locally to National Council of Social
Service and internationally to Very Special Arts, an international arts organisation.
